Personal Improvement

It has now been six weeks since I had abdominal surgery.  On my first day out of the hospital, I hyper-ventilated while attempting a short flight of stairs, even with my brother taking most of my weight.  Now I am healthy enough to alternate between yoga and ballet each day to rebuild strength and stamina.  There have been many days in the last six weeks that I have wondered if I was really better than the day before.  However, at any point I could think back seven days and it was clear to me that I was dramatically better.  Never in my life have I been so aware of personal improvement.

When striving toward improvements, we often want things to change in a flash, and sometimes they do.  More often, change happens incrementally.  It is only when we take a wider view that we even notice.  If physical improvement is not the stage you’re in, do you need to improve intellectually, relationally, spiritually?  Take a longer-term view to observe the ways in which things have improved.  For example, what has changed since you made your New Year’s Resolution?  What hasn’t improved but needs your daily attention over the next few weeks?  Although your improvements may not be as easily observed as my physical recovery, with time and attention they will be no less significant.
