Igniting the Experience of Discovery

The Importance of Focus

Yesterday I chose to reduce from approximately 500 cable television channels to 8.  Although I rarely watched 490 of the channels, I missed them as soon as they were gone.  I paged through my remaining channels, which seemed meager after having had so many.  The channels that remained were not unexpected, mostly network television.
Slowly, my slight sense of loss became a sense of appreciation of what I still had.  Even with so few channels, I would not miss out on “How I Met Your Mother” or “Brothers & Sisters” or “The Office.”  I also discovered that I had a channel that I’d never even watched.  Now, with so few options, I tuned in.  I liked it.  I will probably watch it again.  I had had it all along, but I had not noticed it when I had so many other choices.

It is counterintuitive to think that we could have more by limiting our options, but just like the cable TV channel I never noticed, when we have less we may discover that we have things we never knew about.  In what areas of your life do you need to limit yourself so that you can find out about the great things you already have?  Narrow your focus in that area of your life to tune out distractions and allow yourself to discover and appreciate what you already have.
